Kyōsai, a master creator of both the natural and supernatural world, was drawn to both the humorous and horrible, which followed him from an early age. He was also a very skillful and prolific artist, producing thousands of paintings, prints and drawings during his lifetime. Kyōsai received most of his artistic training with Tōhaku Kanō but he soon became a more independent and imaginative artist than any of the Kanō artists. This gallery shows eleven of his bird or flower-and-bird paintings. Click on a picture to enlarge it. It is difficult to categorize Kyōsai’s painting style because he was so different from everyone else. Kyōsai also published some of his art in picture books.
